This beautiful midnight blue sapphire was cut from a blunted “dog tooth crystal”, which featured a medium blue table and a dark cobalt blue cross table. While the vast majority of sapphire rough has been heat-treated to improve color and clarity, this stone was purchased directly from Leah and Andrew Lane, the mine owners of AussieSapphire. The rough stone was accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity stating that it was mined at Reddestone Creek, Glen Innes, NSW Australia in November of 2005, and was free of any enhancement treatments. This was one of the very first pieces of rough I ever purchased, and it was not until November of 2008 that I finally discovered the perfect pattern for the piece. John Bailey’s Sorrel Custom was a natural choice for the shape and color of the rough--and the final result was absolutely unique. While this stone will require a custom setting, several jewelers who have seen this piece have delighted in the possibilities! The buyer of this sapphire will also receive the original copy of the rough certificate, establishing the stone’s authenticity and provenance.
