This large topaz was an original test cut of an unproven design by Jeff Hunt, entitled “Sundial”. The design can be found online in the Faceting Designs section of the Gemology Project www.GemologyProject.com. The cut resulted in a gemstone with a surprising degree of scintillation and dispersion for topaz. This stone is a very pale blue--similar to pale aqua. Although the treatment status of this rough is unknown, it is likely unheated, based upon the light saturation of the blue color. As can be seen in the photo, a small veil remained in the finished gem; however, this is barely noticeable by eye.
