Songean Sapphire 1.05 ctOval SapphireFaceted by David Dawson Pattern: Little Mick by Jeff Graham Weight: 1.05 carats (to the nearest .05 carat) Size: 5.25/6.2mm Clarity: VS-VVS, slight veil Color: Dark tealish-blue with mild grey overtone Treatment: Unknown, estate sale rough—assume heat treated Rough: Songea per seller This rough came from a parcel of sapphire, which was purchased from a faceter’s estate, and marked as “Songea”. No gemological testing was performed to verify the origin or treatment status of this rough, so it should be regarded as most likely heated. This stone was cut following the natural shape of the rough, utilizing a “barion” cut. The design employed was “Little Mick” by Jeff Graham. Like most sapphire rough, this stone is dichroic, showing a green axis and a blue axis. This gem was cut somewhat in between the two axes, such that when rocked from side to side, the green color can be observed along one of the long sides of the oval, while the blue color can be seen along the other. These colors blend when the stone is viewed face-up, resulting in a pleasant, tealish-blue. This gem possesses a slight grey overtone, which gives it more of a steely, cool appearance. Due to the saturated body color, the stone is a bit dark in dimmer lighting; however, this gem really shows off when outdoors. |
