This delightful purple sapphire was cut using Jeff Graham’s Kling Dart design. The triangular-shaped rough was purchased as absolutely untreated; however, no testing was performed to verify this. One can clearly see from the photograph that this stone features several truly unique needle inclusions. While much less visible to the naked eye than suggested by the camera, these can be seen without a loupe. However, rather than detracting in any way from the appearance of the gem, the needles serve as a fascinating reminder of nature’s beauty. Moreover, intact needles support the claim that this rough was unheated. I researched these needles to some extent, with one gemologist describing them as simply “rutile”. However their appearance and distribution seem more consistent with photographs of “bohemite needles” in sapphire. Regardless of their identity, the needles are a charming feature of this fine little gem.
