Synthetic Alexandrite 9.50 ctNigerian Cushion Design by Jeff GrahamFaceted by Jan Barglowski This started out as a project to find a suitable stone to cut for someone that has a Ph.D. in materials science. This synthetic Alexandrite was originally created for use in a laser but was found unsuitable and sold off as gem rough. Alexandrite has many notable properties: high refractive index, color change (cranberry in incandescent light, blue/green in daylight/fluorescent), pleochroic (different colors in different crystal axes), and polarization. The finished stone mixes all these colors and and is difficult to describe, much less photograph! |
