Sri Lanka Spinel 1.45 ct

Quaker’s Light Design by Jeff Graham
Faceted by David Dawson

Blue Sri Lanka Spinel Checkerboard

Custom designed and faceted Sri Lanka Spinel is virtual impossible to find. It is possible to find commercial cut Spinel but the quality will not come close to this wonderful stone fashioned by David Dawson.

Spinel is known for it’s luster and durability. Originally a species mistaken for sapphire, the Spinel now stands on it’s own as an important gemstone, and is quickly gaining recognition in the precious category.

This gem was cut from rough personally brought from Sri Lanka several years ago. The rough was an unfortunate shape and had a number of natural crystal like inclusions. David Dawson has done an excellent job in realizing a beautiful stone through precision faceting. Several crystal like inclusions can be seen with magnification, but they are virtually invisible by eye. The stone is a bit on the darker side, and I would stop just short of calling it masculine. In hand the gem, color, and faceting are truly amazing.

Notes on the Stone by David Dawson

Checkerboard Spinel

Pattern: Quaker’s Light by Jeff Graham
Weight: 1.45 carats (to the nearest .05 carat)
Size: 8.8/6.5mm
Clarity: SI, crystalline inclusions, small facet divot
Color: Darkly saturated: ultramarine in natural light, indigo blue in fluorescent
Treatment: None
Rough: Sri Lankan

The natural shape of the rough was followed. Checkerboard design was meticulously cut. Goal was preservation of size. One small crystal cut out of the stone, leaving a shallow divot in one crown facet near the girdle. One pocket of included clear crystals could not be entirely cut out—these are visible in the checkerboard pattern near the table, per photo
