To me, cutting for the USFG single stone competition means (1) if I can see the stone as thoroughly as the judges do, and (2) if I can correct the flaws I found before taking the stone off the dop. It gives me a satisfaction that I cut a stone as flawless as possible, and it is objectively scored in numbers how close the stone is to the perfection (this stone got 99.4531/100). As stated in the Editor’s Notes, these stones do not make it to the market. They are not meant for sale. The competition is not aimed to boost the business either. The goal is highly personal.

Editor Note

There are several classes of gemstones that are most familiar to gemstone enthusiats. Precision Faceted - or Custom Cut, Commercial Cut, and Native Cut - or Traditional Cut.

A gemstone faceted for competition represents the pinnacle of the precision faceted category, and I would consider these stones that receive a high score to be in a class by themselves. These gems do not make it to market as the stone generally represents hours and hours of painstaking labor and are faceted under exacting specifications. Simply put, it would be a rare opportunity to add one of these competition stones to your collection.
