Charles McCoy is a retired civil engineer who enjoys taking a stone and creating a gem from it.

In the early 1980’s I got interested in creating jewelry first by purchasing findings and cabochons and stringing them into necklaces. I next bought a cabochon machine and made my own cabs, to mount them I took a few classes in silversmithing. A few years later when my wife had more pendants than she could wear and work required more hours, I stopped and put the machine and tools away.

In 2001 I retired and moved from Chicago to Austin Texas area. In retirement my wife started watching Jewelry Television and decided she would like to collect colored gem stones. After receiving quite a few gems from JTV I started to look at them and didn’t think much of them. This started me thinking that at one time I enjoyed making gems, so I purchased a faceting machine, took a lesson and started faceting, I liked it. In fact I liked it so much that I purchased two more machines (each more expensive and accurate than the last) studied and became a registered gemologist. I have now been faceting for three years and completed over 250 gems.

Gem stones cut in faraway places for the mass market are usually cut quickly for high volume and maximum weight. These gems are more than likely what you will find in your local jewelry store. They are the normal cuts and are not the unique cuts that you will find on One World Gemstones and as a creation by McCoy.
