Artist Profile
Derek Lusk has been mining and cutting his own stones for the past 15 years. His career in gemstones started with the mining of Oregon Opal at Opal Butte in central Oregon. He specialized about five years creating original pendants and beads from that material.
His focus now is the mining Oregon Sunstone, a unique feldspar only found in south central Oregon — the “Oregon Outback”. The sunstones natural colors range from deep ruby reds, to soft pinks, yellows, greens and crystal clear.
Derek also enhances gemstone beads and pearls by inserting precious gemstones with 18k gold bezels into the beads and pearls to create a unique new product.
He now runs and operates his business Opal Illusions from his home in Ashland Oregon where he lives with his wife glass beadmaker Leah Fairbanks and his daughter Tara Arabella.
