Ryan’s fascination with gemstones began at a very young age, but it took a basic Gemology course at College of Southern Nevada in 2006 to really ignite his interest. Teaching himself to cut opal using a Dremmel and homemade and modified attachments soon progressed into other gem materials, carving and “free-hand faceting” rather than cutting traditional cabochons. Ryan concentrated on opal cutting with his Dremmel intermittently until December 2009 when he faceted his first stone with his second and third soon to follow. Though, he would have to wait until late 2010 to continue faceting on a regular basis.
Having an extensive background in fine woodworking, working with precious metals was a natural progression and perfect complement to his lapidary interests. In Fall 2010, Ryan took his first jewelry-making class at College of Southern Nevada where he is currently studying for a degree in fine arts. Ryan plans to pursue a career in both jewelry making and gem cutting.
