My Name is Stephen Kotlowski; I’m a well-established facetor in the gem trade. My credits include being a multi-year AGTA Spectrum “Cutting Edge” Award winner: 1992, 1995, 2008, 2009 and 2010. As well, in 1988 I became the first person to receive a “Gemmy” Award under the professional category and certification the following year of “Supreme Master Faceter” from the American Society of Gem Cutters, ASG, in Washington DC. Also a semi accomplished gem photographer and have an expansive collection of high quality photographs representing my work that include commissioned stones cut for clients. I offer a photograph series of the progress of cutting a client’s gemstone from rough to finish.
Being a self taught facetor I cut my first stone in 1968 while just a teenager. I received a BS degree in Geology from Richard Stockton State College, New Jersey in 1982 and received a Graduate Gemologist in Residence from the GIA, New York in 1984. I’ve owned and operated my business since that time and also worked from 1987 till 1990 as the head Lapidary for Krementz Gemstones in Newark, New Jersey, after which I continued with my own business: Uniquely K Custom Gem’s.
Although my faceting practice is predominately directed toward “the trade”, I do accept commissioned work from individuals. Additionally, I have a growing inventory of custom-cut, uniquely designed gemstones that I am pleased to feature here on “The Custom Gemstone Studio” and on FaceBook called Phenomenal Facets.
Each and every one of my designs is original and I do not normally cut designs by other factors unless requested. Each uniquely faceted gem is created individually on the machine “on the fly”. I do not use Gem Cad though if a client request a specific design they must supply the instructions for their special cut.
For those interested in learning to facet or becoming a facetor themselves, I’m the Ultra Tec representative in the Sedona, Arizona area and teach faceting.
