Faceting by Stevo

Steve Wallner has been collecting rocks and bringing them home for 50 years. As a boy, his mother could always count on removing “gemstones” from his pockets. The lifelong interest eventually drew him to precious gemstones, and as a natural progression, cutting the actual stone. The hobby soon became a passion.
Steve enjoys cutting classic designs in tourmaline and garnet. He cuts other gemstones as well, but the rainbow of colors available in tourmaline and the deep colors in garnet make these two his favorites.
A background in IT helps him to utilize the modeling tools available to maximize the performance and beauty of gemstones. This background also balances nicely with gem cutting. “When you work in IT you never have a truly completed piece of work; IT projects constantly evolve. It is very satisfying for me to take a piece of rough from natural form to finished gemstone”.
Learning all of the aspects of gem cutting is a constant source of enjoyment to Steve. “There is no way to know everything related to gem faceting and gemology. Every day there is something new to learn. Thankfully there is a wealth of knowledge on the subject and a number of experienced people who willingly provide guidance.” Steve’s goal as a faceter is to constantly build his knowledge in gemology and to hone his skills as a craftsman to produce the most beautiful gems available.
